Comptrollers of Army Accounts 1703-1835
Provsional list compiled by J C Sainty, January 2003
Introduction
This office was created in 1703. Appointments were made by the crown by letters patent under the great seal. Until 1806 two comptrollers served with a salary of £1500. In that year the number was increased to three, the first comptroller being granted a salary of £2000, the other two salaries of £1500 each. Between 1815 and 1817 a fourth comptroller served, also with a salary of £1500. On the death of King, the first commissioner, his place was not filled, his two remaining colleagues serving until the abolition of the office in 1835.
Between 1785 and 1805 the two comptrollers served as commissioners for the auditing of public accounts for which they received an additional £500 a year.
